After Ben Nicholson— bar-relief
This is my latest work exploring shallow relief plaster cast, inspired by Ben Nicholson the St Ives artist and Modernist painter from the last century.
I wanted to learn the process of creating shallow reliefs using plaster-of-paris cast on sculpted clay. I wanted to explore imprinting and building-up layers prior to casting, and afterwards, working the plaster cast, carving and scraping etc. I thought I would use a ready-made motif— a Ben Nicholson cardboard relief, as a spring board so I could concentrate on technique. Although the work inevitably took its own course.
